The Wachusett Youth Lacrosse (WYL) Select program is for players with the skill, desire and commitment to play lacrosse at a higher level than the WYL recreational (Rec) program. Any player who is a full participant in WYL’s Rec program is eligible to tryout. Based on the response WYL received during registration for the 2016 season there is increased interest in the Select program. Accordingly, before the season gets started, WYL wants interested players and their parents to: 1) be clear about “playing time” expectations in Select games; and 2) be aware that due to the increased number of Select candidates there will be a more formal pre-season evaluation and selection process for Select teams than in years past.
As in WYL’s “Rec” program, the Select program adheres to the “Spirit of the Game” philosophy. This means sportsmanship, fair play and respect for all players, coaches & officials remain a primary focus. However, Select games are intended to be played and coached more competitively than Rec games. Select teams are held to league “win-loss” standings with implications for post season play-offs. As such, playing time will be dictated by game conditions and can result in some players getting more playing time than others. Similarly, in order to be competitive in games, Select roster sizes are limited and evaluations will be held to determine which players will be on the Select team roster. WYL will utilize several outside evaluators from the surrounding lacrosse community to assist WYL coaches as they assess the players trying out.
In addition, WYL will encourage any players who try out but are not selected for the Select team roster, to still participate in the Select program as a “practice squad” member. This will allow them the chance to continue to work on their skills at practices with the active Select team roster and Select coaches, and may result in an opportunity to join the active roster as the season unfolds.
